The Burning Ghat
"Dhobi was accustomed to washing his customers' clothes by hand on the ghat just upstream from the burning ghat where the dead were cremated at the water's edge. It was hard enough getting the clothes clean and spotless with only a wooden paddle and a bar of Sunlight Soap, but when the water was flecked with ashes and other remnants of the dead, it was even more difficult ...".
